Consultation for the alignment of the CE Marking Directives
19 January 2012

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills have opened up a consultation that seeks your views on the European Commission’s proposal to align nine CE Marking Directives with the New Legislative Framework (NLF), and in particular the provisions of the common framework for the marketing of products (Decision 768/2008/EC).

The nine CE Marking Directives are:

     · Low Voltage Electrical Equipment Directive
     · Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive
     · Lifts Directive
     · Simple Pressure Vessels Directive
     · ATEX (Equipment etc for Use in Potentially Explosive Atmospheres) Directive
     · Pyrotechnic Articles Directive
     · Civil Explosives Directive
     · Measuring Instruments Directive
     · Non-Automatic Weighing Instruments Directive

The alignment has the following aims:

· To address the number of non-compliant products that reach the market through improved traceability and clearer requirements on manufacturers, importers and distributors to co-operate with enforcement authorities
· To address inconsistent performance between Notified Bodies through a reinforced notification process
· To address the complexity of the current legislation through alignment of commonly used definitions and certain aspects of the conformity assessment process

The consultation is open until 6th April 2012.
