The CE mark is a symbol that when affixed to a product indicates that it complies with the relevant EU legislation, which enables the free movement of products within the European market. The CE mark is affixed by a manufacturer, importer or authorised representative, who are required to ensure and make a declaration that the product complies.
CE Marking is compulsory and must be affixed before a product is placed (for sale or own use) on the market within the 27 member states of European Economic Area. Not all products are required to be CE marked, only products that fall within the scope of a European Directive that has requirements for a product to be CE marked. Where a product is required to be CE marked, there is a simple process to follow.
In general CE marking must appear on the product but there can be exceptions. It may also appear on the packaging, in manuals or other supporting literature.
The CE mark must not be less than 5mm in its vertical height, and the proportions maintained.
A CE mark is a symbol that indicates a product complies with the relevant EU legislation. The users will see a CE mark on the product and a copy of the Declaration of Conformity maybe provided with the product.
For the manufacturer, the CE mark means that there is a technical file that contains all the relevant information to support the CE mark on the product. This may include, drawings, bill of materials, test report and assessments, instructions and other documents that are required by the Directive or support the conformity of the product.
When a product does not fall within a CE Marking Directive, then it will almost certainly fall within the scope of one of the other product Directives, such as the General Product Safety Directive (GPSD). The GPSD ensures that all products intended for or likely to be used by consumers under normal or reasonably foreseeable conditions are safe.
Other product Directives that maybe applicable, include the WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) and the RoHS (Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Directives, which may impose other requirements upon your product. Please see our Directives page for more information.
