About the CE Marking Association (Managed by Wemtech)
The main purpose of the CE Marking Association is to assist UK companies that manufacture, import or distribute products that fall within the scope of at least one of the 21 CE Marking Directives (such as electrical apparatus, machines, medical devices, pressure equipment, construction products, toys, personal protective equipment, gas burners, recreational craft and other consumer products), in understanding and meeting their legal obligations with regards to CE Marking and product compliance, and keeping up-to-date with changes in legislation.
The CE Marking Association provides independent and authoritative help and advice regarding CE Marking and related product compliance Directives; delivers training and workshops to increase in-house knowledge and ability; provides compliance services such as EMC testing, electrical safety testing and machinery assessments; and through membership of the association, keeps members abreast of current product legislation and future changes by providing regular meetings, newsletters, standards updates, access to the website members area, and technical assistance from our experienced team of consultants. The CE Marking Association is assisted by an advisory body comprising of representatives from reputable organisations within the industry, both in the public and private sector, and is chaired and managed by the not-for-profit organisation Wemtech.
Each committee member has their own specialism that contributes to the association’s network of expert advice that is available to assist our members with their extensive range of compliance requirements. The CE Marking Association also regularly liaises with; BIS (formerly BERR & DTI); enforcement agencies such as Trading Standards, the HSE, and the MHRA; and other industry authorities, who collectively assist the association in keeping members up-to-date on legislation and associated policy.
History
Originally the West Midlands EMC Club, the CE Marking Association was originally established in 1993 under a national initiative by the DTI (now BIS) as one of several regional EMC clubs set up to assist manufacturers in understanding their obligations as required by the soon to be mandatory EMC Directive 89/336/EEC and the upcoming CE marking legislation. Over time, as some of the other clubs declined, the West Midlands EMC Club grew to become the Midlands EMC Club, and then the Midlands EMC & CE Club, which extended its coverage to include all of the CE Marking Directives. Due to continued success and popularity, in 2003 the club was re-launched as the CE Marking Association offering comprehensive CE marking and product compliance advice across the UK and beyond.
As one of the few EMC clubs that remain active, the CE Marking Association currently has over 300 members including many large and small organisations and representatives of many of the industry’s experts and enforcement agencies. In addition to the range of member services offered, the Association is currently able to provide, through its managing company Wemtech, advice, consultancy, compliance services including product testing and assessment, and training, in all areas of CE Marking and product compliance using its skilled and experienced in-house team and testing/assessment facilities.
